Currently Not Collectible Status

What Is Currently Not Collectible Status?

Short answer

Currently Not Collectible (CNC) status is an IRS decision to temporarily stop collecting a tax debt because paying would prevent you from meeting basic living expenses. While your account is in CNC status, the IRS generally stops levies and wage garnishments. The debt does not go away: penalties and interest continue, and the IRS can resume collection if your finances improve.

Who may qualify

  • Your allowable monthly expenses, under IRS collection standards, equal or exceed your income.
  • You have little or no equity in assets that could be sold or borrowed against.
  • Your financial information is documented, usually on Form 433-F or Form 433-A.

Common situations include job loss, disability, retirement on a fixed income, or a business that has closed.

What CNC status does

  • Generally stops levies on bank accounts and wages.
  • Gives breathing room while finances stabilize.
  • The 10-year collection period keeps running. If CNC lasts long enough, some or all of the debt may expire when that period ends.

What CNC status does not do

  • It does not erase the debt.
  • Penalties and interest keep adding up.
  • Future tax refunds are applied to the balance.
  • The IRS may file, or keep, a federal tax lien.
  • You must keep filing returns and paying new taxes on time.

How long it lasts

The IRS reviews accounts in CNC status from time to time, often using the income reported on your tax returns. If your income rises, the IRS may ask for a new financial statement and move you to a payment plan.

CNC vs. other options

CNC is often a bridge, not the final answer. Depending on your situation, an Offer in Compromise or a partial payment installment agreement may give a more permanent result.

How we help

We prepare accurate financial statements using IRS standards, document hardship clearly, and request CNC status directly with the IRS or the assigned Revenue Officer. We also check whether a more permanent option fits better.
